MULBERRIES

It's been fun to observe the growing popularity of dried mulberries, which was boosted even further this month by a feature segment about white mulberries on The Dr. Oz Show. Even before the TV episode, there has been a surge of sales and interest. Is it due to the berries' unique sweet flavor and chewy texture, or is it the 'Turkish Delight’s' reputation as an antioxidant powerhouse and protein source that is attracting new fans? This week, you can find out for yourself at 25% off savings. Use coupon code mulber25 to get 25% off our dried organic Mulberries from October 15-21.

The key themes noted by Dr. Oz in his September 30 episode are that white mulberries are: delicious and chewy like a raisin yet contain about ½ the sugar; an especially strong fruit source of antioxidants, protein and fiber; and a cost-effective superfood that is very affordable.

Here are the highlights from the Dr. Oz White Mulberries Checklist. “While many dried fruits contain 30 to 40 grams of sugar (more sugar than a candy bar!), dried mulberries contain less than half the amount of sugar found in raisins and significantly less than dried figs, cranberries, bananas, pineapples, mangos and dates. The berries pack a powerful antioxidant punch thanks to phenols that help neutralize damaging free radicals. Studies suggest that the antioxidants in white mulberries may help protect the heart against damage from some toxins.”

“The berries are also a great source of protein, containing 4 grams of protein in just ⅓ of a cup. The impressive amount of fiber found in mulberries can help lower your cholesterol and regulate your digestion. You can get 20% of your daily fiber needs in just ⅓ of a cup! Watching your weight? No need to worry – mulberries have no saturated fat.”

Earlier this year, Patrick McKibbin became the second youngest person from Canada to climb Mount Everest (age 24). We're thrilled that he brought Navitas Naturals to the summit with him. Read more below to learn about the rigorous training that Patrick performed to get ready to climb the world's highest peak, and his favorite superfoods that helped him thrive under harsh conditions.

Navitas Naturals (NN): What was your nutrition routine like in the 2 months leading up to the expedition?

Patrick McKibbin (PM): I used a lot of Navitas superfoods that I knew would give me the nutrition I needed easily and quickly. The superfoods were especially fantastic in smoothies. Some of my favorites for Mt. Everest training included cacao, maqui , and maca in either fruit or vegetable smoothies. I would also make tasty salads using Navitas acai and hemp seeds.

NN: Were there special fitness techniques that you utilized to get ready for the trek, including altitude preparations?

PM: Typically I would swim 4-5 days a week, concentrating on long endurance swims at a low intensity, about 4 km. Running was usually 6 days a week, either on the stair climber or treadmill. It would be as close to lactic threshold as possible, rather than at an aerobic level. It was important to try and mimic the Mt. Everest conditions as much as I could before I left. On the stair climber I wore a 50lb weight vest and 10lb on my feet. To mimic the lower oxygen levels, I would nose-breathe while running, and in the pool.

NN: What superfood did you eat the most when you were training, and why?

PM: Food was a critical part of the trip, I needed something that would be satisfying, tasty and that wouldn't cause an upset to my system. I didn't want any unfamiliar things entering my system that could cause gastrointestinal stress. Being sick is one thing, but it's another thing when you're expected to climb on. Maca was my go-to superfood. I would add it to salads, beans and potatoes. It has an awesome wholesome flavor and is very satisfying in the stomach.

NN: Which Navitas product do you think was most beneficial for climbing Mt Everest, and which is your favorite at home?

PM:It's funny, one can get just about anything made for you at base camp. Everything comes up the Khumbu valley on the backs of yaks. An exception to this was green vegetables. So, of course it was a privilege to have the resources of Navitas. I was most thankful for having Navitas Wheatgrass so that I could get some organic greens into my body. At home, I can't seem to get enough of the Coconut Water Powder. Training on a regular basis is draining, and properly rehydrating can be harder than it seems. Water with the electrolytes and flavour of coconut is key to helping me stay in top shape.

NN: What was your diet like once you were finally in Nepal at basecamp and on the final push, and what did other people on your team eat - are most climbers conscious of healthy nutrition?

PM: Surprisingly not many people were as attentive about their nutrition as I tried to be. At the end of a hard day, it's easy to dive into whatever food comes around when the body is calling for calories urgently. Not everyone performed the same on the mountain. Some were happy just to get through each day. Fortunately, I felt very nourished, fit and healthy for most of the trip and was able to maintain a strong pace with the Nepalese Sherpas (mountain guides).

NN: When you prepare for the journey, how much time and effort goes into keeping everything as light as possible?

PM: On a trip like this, every ounce counts and having nutrient-dense food is very beneficial. An important factor on the trip was the acclimatization: how long we spent just training around basecamp before the summiting. As time went on our skills in packing and eating became more refined for our specific needs. There is really no margin for error when it comes to weight, by the end of the trip when you make your final summit push, you have to be 100% confident in what you will be eating and bringing to wear.

NN: What was the most surprising thing about climbing Everest, something you did not expect?

PM: Despite it being one of the toughest and most daunting things I have done, it was surprisingly not intimidating when I got there. I've had strong feelings and respect for the mountain for as long as I can remember. I found Everest to be a very spiritual place.

Navitas Naturals (NN): What is the most noteworthy functional nutrition aspect of this recipe, and which superfoods does it feature?

NN: What is Jen's favorite Navitas superfood, and what is Jadah's?

SGS: Jen Hansard: I eat mainly plant-based meals, so making sure I get enough protein and omega–3's is crucial. I am digging the Navitas Naturals Chia Seeds. These teeny tiny seeds are packed with protein, fiber and omega–3 fatty acids. Adding two tablespoons of chia seeds to my green smoothie is a simple way to make sure I start my day on the right foot.

SGS: Jadah Sellner: I love Navitas Naturals Hemp Protein Powder as a plant-based protein source. It's an easy superfood to add to my daily green smoothies and you can't beat 16 grams of protein per serving – that's vegetarian-friendly, too!

NN: What is the most satisfying aspect of your website and blog, and what has surprised you the most since you started it up?

SGS: Every day, amazing people thank us for introducing them and their families to the green smoothie lifestyle. Knowing that we have helped them get more fruits and vegetables into their body is such a great feeling. We believe green smoothies are a lifestyle, not a diet and once people complete The 30-Day Green Smoothie Challenge they believe it as well.

Berry Cherry Jubilee:–An Antioxidant–Rich Green Smoothie

By Simple Green Smoothies, serves 2.

2 Cups Spinach, fresh
2 Cups Water
1 Cup Cherries, pitted
1 Cup Mixed Berries, frozen
1 Banana
2 Tbsp Navitas Naturals Chia Seeds

Blend spinach and water until smooth. Next add the remaining fruits and blend again. Use at least one frozen fruit to make the green smoothie cold (we like frozen cherries because the pit is already removed). Sprinkle chia seeds on top for a light crunchy texture.
