Although this delicious, energizing superfruit is rather new to North America, ancient cultures in Asia have enjoyed goji berries for thousands of years as a key part of their diet and traditional herbal medicine. Recently, growing demand for goji berries inspired scientists to investigate the many benefits touted by Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners for centuries. A controlled study published this month in Optometry and Vision Science titled Goji Berry Supplementation May Prevent Macular Degeneration concluded,
"These findings suggest that goji berry supplementation increases plasma zeaxanthin and antioxidant levels as well as protects from hypopigmentation and soft drusen accumulation in the macula of elderly subjects."
Scientists credited the goji berry’s role in promoting eye health to its content of zeaxanthin, a carotenoid antioxidant which plays a key role in healthy eyesight. Other published studies suggest that goji berries provide potential benefits against cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases, and that they may offer valuable neuroprotective, hepatoprotective, anticancer and immunomodulatory activity.
Goji berries are one of the highest sources of antioxidants, and are a complete source of protein including 18 amino acids and all essential amino acids. Gojis also provide 21 minerals including zinc, iron, copper, calcium, selenium and phosphorus, as well as vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, and E. Other key nutrients in goji berries include calcium beta-sisterol (an anti-inflammatory agent), linoleic acid (a healthy fatty acid), sesquiterpenoids, tetraterpenoids (zeaxanthin, physalin), betaine and polysaccharides which are known to fortify the immune system.
Navitas Naturals Organic Goji Berries have a pleasant flavor that is like a mix of cranberries and cherries. They have a beautiful orange-red color, with texture and size similar to raisins. Goji Berries can be enjoyed as a snack from the bag, or added to smoothies, muffins, yogurt, trail mix, cereal, soup, salad, desserts and many other easy recipes.
