camu powder

Mother Nature’s Super C

Often called the Camu-Camu berry, this fruit grows on a low-growing shrub (Myrciaria Dubia) native to the lush climates along the Black Water River region of the Amazonian rainforest. The buzz about this potent berry has spread around the world, earning it the nickname “nature’s vitamin pill.” Containing a higher naturally occurring vitamin C content than any other food, camu has long been used for its nutritional and medicinal attributes. Navitas Naturals Camu is grown organically in Peru, where gentle freeze-drying methods are used to protect and maximize the nutrient potential of this extraordinary superberry powder.

Product of Peru

Peru is home to millions of acres of forests, thousands of plant species and around one third of indigenous populations residing in rural areas. This trifecta results in a treasure chest of valuable plants and deep knowledge.

Navitas Naturals Camu Powder is sourced from organically cultivated regions of Peru. The small shrubby camu tree has smooth bark and grows along the winding banks of rivers running through the lowland rainforests of Amazonia. The plant has adapted to flooding and is able to survive submersed in water for over five months! Abundant rains nourish the growth of small fruits that are hand harvested by families who have settled along rivers and expertly direct their canoes for collection.

To make our Camu Powder, seeds from the camu berries are removed, then the fruit is slow-dried and low-temperature milled into a fine soluble powder. Our Camu Powder contains no fillers or carriers, just pure, vital camu berries.

The Power of Camu

In a world that is increasingly inter-connected and with more potential for germs to spread, it is more important than ever to maintain a healthy immune system. Scientific research documents the effects of vitamin C to promote immune system health. Camu fruits are the highest documented source of vitamin C - providing 200 times more than a banana, 56 times more than a lemon, and 30-60 times more than an orange. Camu also contains a broad range of other important nutrients including potent antioxidants, phytochemicals and amino acids, as well as many important vitamins and minerals including beta-carotene and potassium.

The Power of Camu

The powerful nutrients found in the camu berry have a wide range of therapeutic effects. Vitamin C, especially in high concentrations like in the camu berry, has been shown to: support general strengthening of the immune system; reduce inflammation and the diseases connected with chronic inflammation; and protect against viral infections. Research studying high doses of vitamin C has also found that it may promote healthy skin and protect against free radical damage.

Peruvian rainforests are home to great biodiversity and many indigenous cultures. The United Nations recognizes that the trade of natural products from sustainably managed biodiverse regions is a major contribution toward sustainable development. The responsible collection and cultivation of camu fruits provides an important alternative to detrimental farming and deforestation practices. The forested areas where camu grows is actually worth twice the amount that can be gained by replacing it with cattle grazing. The camu industry has great economic potential for the stewards of these precious ecosystems - farmers. Over 10,000 families rely on the collection of camu, and this supports the alleviation of poverty for farmers, buyers and processors in the Amazon.

More than Just a Supplement

Many people in Peru enjoy camu flavored ice creams, sweets and beverages. Navitas Naturals Camu Powder is a red-orange powder with a tart berry flavor that blends well with fruits, juices or sweeteners. Camu purists enjoy a simple “punch” by stirring a spoonful of the easily dissolvable powder into a glass of water and adding a touch of natural sweetener (such as coconut palm sugar). Camu powder also makes a superb addition to juices, smoothies and yogurt.

I put Camu Powder in just about every smoothie I make, particularly in winter when fresh citrus is sparse. Use 1/8 to 1/4 tsp in salad dressings to give them zip.
