Superfood of the Andes

Maca is an herbaceous plant native to the high Andean Mountains of Bolivia and Peru. It is one of the only food plants in the world able to thrive at such a high altitude. Maca, and more specifically the root of the plant, has a long history as a superfood. The maca root was prized throughout the Inca empire for its adaptogenic-like qualities that enable it to nourish and balance the body's delicate endocrine system, and to help cope with stress. It also energizes naturally, without the jitters and crashes of caffeine, and it can aid in reproductive function by helping to balance hormones and increase fertility.

Product of Peru

There is evidence that maca has been cultivated in Peru as far back as 1600 BC. We source our certified organic maca roots from high up on the Junin Plateau in the Peruvian Andes. The stark, beautiful environment on the plateau is home to very few plants. Maca is one of the rare and special botanicals that can thrive in that extreme ecological zone. Days filled with intense sunlight and evenings of whipping winds and freezing temperatures infuse the roots with strength.

After harvesting only the finest maca roots, they are slow-dried and gently milled at low temperatures to preserve the natural integrity of the food. Gelatinized maca powder is a concentrated form. To create it, the starch is extracted, which makes this superfood more digestible and the nutrients more bioavailable for increased absorption. Navitas Naturals Gelatinized Maca powder is certified organic, kosher, gluten-free and vegan.

Root of Strength & Balance

Spanish conquistadors recorded in their journals that when they arrived at the puna of Junin in Peru, the babies were well-fed and adults were tall, attributing these characteristics to the diet of maca. The Quechua Indians in the central highlands of Peru continue to consider maca a highly nutritious food with a range of physical benefits and they include it as a regular staple in their diet.

Why does my Maca have a warning on it?

Balancing Adaptogen

Peruvian folklores tell of maca being used in the Tahuantinsuyo Empire by warriors to increase their strength and endurance. The maca root has potent adaptogenic properties helping each body differently based on individual needs. Unique alkaloids found in maca, called Macainas, have been shown to nourish and support the endocrine system. Maca also provides an abundance of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and sterols.

Maca is a healthy food, not a miracle drug. These statements herein have not been reviewed by the FDA. Navitas Naturals products are not intended to treat, diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.

Incan Superfood

In the mountainous regions where maca comes from, it is a regular staple in the diet and is often eaten boiled and sliced, similar to potato chips. A popular preparation of maca is ‘watia’, a traditional method of cooking with a hole dug underground and filled with layers of maca and hot coals to roast the roots. Other preparations include use as a gruel with milk, and cooked with potatoes, apples, oats, quinoa or fava beans.

The roots are also toasted and ground to prepare a maca coffee-like beverage, and fermented, cooked and mashed to make a mild homemade beer. Some Peruvians prefer the boiled roots with water, milk, honey and cinnamon. Today, it is possible to find a wide range of products infused with maca, including whiskey, wine, ice cream and cosmetics.

Navitas Naturals Gelatinized Maca Powder has a pungent and sweet nutty taste with hints of butterscotch flavor. It can be mixed easily into smoothies, shakes and juices for a flavorful and healthy boost, and it can also be added to desserts and baked goods. Add some to your favorite pancake batter to create an energizing breakfast.

Gelatinized Maca: Frequently Asked Questions

Q:    What is the difference between Raw Maca and Gelatinized Maca?

A:   Gelatinized Maca refers to the process of removing the starches from the product allowing for easier digestion. Gelatinization uses heat to break the cellular walls of the starch molecules and they are extracted from the Maca. Raw Maca has the most enzymes, vitamins and nutrients intact as it is low temperature processed. We offer both so you can choose which best suits your lifestyle.

Q:    If Gelatinized Maca is more concentrated, why are nutritional values similar to the Raw Maca?

A:   Gelatinized Maca is more concentrated as it is starch free and more easily assimilated by the body. The amount of starch removed from the Maca in the gelatinization process is not significant in terms of changing the carbohydrate density of the food.

Q:    What color is your Gelatinized Maca?

A:   Navitas Naturals Gelatinized Maca is a blend of all the maca colors, black, cream and red. Each of the colors offers different adaptogenic properties. Our Maca is a blend of all colors, and therefore offers a broader adaptogenic quality.

Q:    What does Lepidium Meyenii, Walpers mean?

A:   Lepidium Meyenii is the biological, Latin name for Maca. Walpers refers to Gerhard Walpers, who first described and named Maca Lepidiium Walpers in 1843.

Q:    How much powder is in each capsule?

A:    500mg of maca are in each capsule. 10 capsules is the equivalent to one teaspoon of powder. We recommend taking less in the capsule form as it is thought to be more quickly digested in capsule form.

Q:    What is the recommended daily dosage for Maca?

A:    If you are new to using Maca, Navitas Naturals recommends starting out with ¼ to ½ of a tsp (1500mg to 2500mg). Each individual responds to Maca differently and some might find this dose to be substantial. Navitas Naturals recommends taking up to 1 tsp daily.
