Darkest Dark Chocolate
Cacao has been celebrated for centuries throughout Mexican, Central and South American cultures due to its delicious taste and exceptional nutritional profile. Aztecs once used cacao beans as currency in ancient times. Several Mayan rituals, festivals and celebrations have been devoted to honoring cacao, and its Latin name translates to ‘Food of the Gods’. Inspired by the aphrodisiac and stimulating effects of cacao, Aztec marriage ceremonies were known to involve the divine fruit.
Cacao beans are the seeds of the tropical cacao fruit. They are about the size of an almond and the taste is rich, creamy and full of cacao's complex flavor notes that range from berry to coffee. Pure cacao beans are an excellent source of nutritious antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can boost your energy levels and may help to keep your immune system functioning at an optimal level.
In addition to being a culinary favorite, the sustainable cacao industry is a good choice for the planet - offering an alternative to destruction of the rainforests by logging. Shade-grown cacao from biodiverse tropical havens creates income for farmers without compromising the natural resources. The tropical trees naturally withstand flooding and drought, demonstrating a safe choice for growers facing climate change. Approximately 70% of the world’s cacao is produced by small landholders who are farming in the center of great biodiversity. These farmers are important stewards of the Earth and helping to empower them has a ripple effect on the health of the planet.

Product of Peru
In warm and humid climates of Peru, often growing along riverbanks, the tropical cacao tree bears large football-shaped fruits called pods that are filled with sweet white pulp and beans.
The Peruvian cacao farmers we partner with are known for their strict organic growing and processing practices. They hand select the beans to ensure the best quality and flavor. Utilizing natural composting and pest control, these farmers carry on the growing traditions that have been successful for over a thousand years. After the beans are extracted from the fruit, they are washed with purified water before being partially fermented to remove bitterness. Cacao Beans: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are your Cacao Beans processed?
A: Navitas Naturals organic Cacao is picked and then immediately starts a natural fermentation in the fruit like pod for about 48-72 hours. Once extracted from the pod, purified water is used to cleanse the beans. The beans are then low temperature dried. Navitas Naturals uses the least invasive, lowest impact, and lowest temperature processing methods available in an effort to preserve the maximum nutritional density of our superfoods.
Q: Can your Cacao Beans be eaten raw (as is?), or do they need to be roasted or cooked?
A: The beans, nibs, and powder can be consumed raw and in fact, you get more benefits not heating or cooking raw cacao as it is full of enzymes, vitamins, and nutrients that are carefully preserved in the low temperature processing. You can still use raw cacao in hot drinks and baking, but you lose some of the nutrients. Take note that minerals aren’t affected by heat so you still get those benefits despite how the cacao is prepared.
Q: Is it ok to eat the peel of the Raw Cacao Bean?
A: There is fiber in the peel so it’s beneficial to eat it. Some people prefer to peel them before eating them or grinding them, and that’s fine too.
Q: What is the Flavonoid content of your Cacao Beans?
Q: Why does my Cacao have a warning on it?
