Maca is a potent superfood root that has been prized for centuries by indigenous cultures due to its ability to nourish, increase stamina, boost libido and combat fatigue. The root is a complex, nutrient-dense whole food that is a good source of vitamins, amino acids, plant sterols, essential minerals and essential fatty acids. Maca is often regarded as a stress-soothing adaptogen. It contains four unique alkaloids (Macaina 1, 2, 3 and 4) which studies have found nourish the endocrine system.

To make Navitas Naturals Raw Maca Powder, our farming partners hand-select the finest raw maca roots from the Junin Plateau of the Peruvian Andes. The raw maca roots are gently dried and milled at low temperatures to preserve the complex nutrition of the raw superfood. It is in then shipped directly to us and packaged for your kitchen shelf. Navitas Naturals also offers Gelantinized Maca Powder. Gelatinization is a process that removes the starch, creating a more concentrated powder that is easier to digest and absorb.

What are some ways I can use Maca?

Navitas Naturals Maca Powder and Gelatinized Maca Powder are certified organic. They are 100% pure powders made solely from maca plant roots. They are grown with organic agricultural processes. To the best of our knowledge, no other chemicals are used to grow it, nor are they added to it or introduced during the processing of these products. The chemical element that triggered this requirement is lead. Lead is a naturally occurring element that can be frequently found in soil and water.
What is Cal Prop 65 and what is the safe limit for lead in foods?
Cal Prop 65 is California’s Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986. Companies are required to place a warning label on any product they sell within California if it exceeds the level that the State has established as risk free for a list of over eight hundred chemicals. These standards are specific to the state of California. The lead standard in California is more stringent than what is required at the U.S. federal level, and by other governments including Canada and the European Union. Under Cal Prop 65, the State of California has determined that the safe harbor level for lead to avoid the risk of reproductive toxicity is no more than 0.5 mcg/day. This was calculated by identifying the level of exposure that has been shown to have no observable effect and then dividing that level by 1,000, to provide a very large margin of safety. California's 0.5 mcg/day threshold for lead is 150 times less than the 75 mcg/day limit that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indicated as safe for consumption by pregnant or lactating women. California is the only state that requires warning labels at this low of a level.
What kind of food safety program does Navitas Naturals implement?
We focus on having the best tools and systems in place to ensure quality, safety and consistency for each of the products we produce. We're pleased to demonstrate our commitment to quality and safety by achieving GMP / HACCP certification for our facility in Marin County, California. Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a scientific process control system for identifying and preventing biological, chemical and physical hazards in the food production and distribution process. While HACCP is a mandatory program for some food categories in the U.S. such as meat, seafood and juice, Navitas Naturals implements the program on a voluntary basis. We test our foods on a regular basis as part of the HACCP program. At this time, we are not aware of any other competitor that has HACCP certification.
